In a study by Sprout Social, 70% of US consumers feel that it is important for brands to take a stand on political and social issues. For several companies, the entrepreneur hero has become the personification of the brand expressing issues beyond their products. These entrepreneur heroes, like Elon Musk and Sir Richard Branson, benefit from the ability to create large social media followings and a media that loves to pay attention to them. Conversely, equally impressive entrepreneurs like Bill Gates or Larry Page do not get as much love when it comes to innovation because they stay out of the limelight. This has a direct benefit to Elon Musk, for example the ability to retain the loyalty of retail investors in Tesla stock during the turbulent years or the ability to keep attracting top tier talent to SpaceX after the initial rocket launch failures.
