“Foie Gras” – a cartoon that illustrates how the over-investment in Fintech startups has left an overhang for exit opportunities and made it harder for fintech-focused venture funds to raise their next fund.

Since 2018, global Fintech startups have secured $479Bn in venture funding, and yet there was only $755Bn in M&A acquisitions and IPO exits.

Today, there are 26,045 global fintech startups. Some Fintech’s are going to become profitable, but there are an awful lot of VCs hoping their startup investment will be one of the few that has an exit.

A successful VC fund needs to make at least 8x on their investment to be in a competitive position to raise their next fund.

“I don’t think it’s fair (or accurate) to compare “investment value” to “exit value” over the same time period in a space with a median holding period of 5+ years. It’s more accurate to compare the prior four years to the trailing four if you’re trying to reach a conclusion on the healthiness of a market for venture investment. “
