Cage Fight Training

“Cage Fight Training” – a cartoon that illustrates how Threads represents Mark Zuckerburg’s best effort yet to successfully build out a successful crypto-related, decentralized technology business.

Meta’s attempt at creating its own currency (Libra) and then renaming itself after the web3 metaverse, resulted in massive value destruction and the firm’s retrenchment in Q2 to focus on its core advertising and messaging businesses.

Threads has a decentralized back-end technology with the use of ActivityPub, which is the same protocol as the open-source Mastodon system.

This approach offers the first mainstream social media platform that can support consumer data sovereignty and data portability.

However, Threads’ initial success (30M users in the first 18 hours of launch) is down to its ability to tap into Instagram’s 1.6BN user base and Elon Musk’s uncanny ability to launch new Twitter features that turn-off users (e.g. the recently announced view limit).

Perhaps Elon’s greatest contribution to the advancement of decentralized technology is to alert everyone that any user-generated media platform with a single point of control (or in Elon’s case, failure) is bad for users over the long term.

“This is funny Ian, but mostly because of your commentary about how Meta is giving data sovereignty to its user base, when in fact they require you agree to providing deeply concerning personal data, and that data is in fact controlled by the evil empire of Meta. Silly cartoon but sillier comments…”

“Zuckerberg also has some huge wins besides launching Facebook itself, including the early acquisition of Instagram itself. Agreed he’s taken some L’s lately but Threads seems poised to capitalize on (and speed up) Twitter’s demise.”
