Strike Out
“Strike Out” – a cartoon that illustrates how the gaming industry is changing viewing behavior across the entertainment industry.
From 2019 to 2022, the average time that men aged 15-24 spent gaming each day surged by almost 45 minutes – more than it had over the previous 16 years.
Meanwhile, according to Nielsen, the number of Americans watching traditional television has dropped by 33% and for most of the world their mobile-first lifestyle has very high usages of hyper casual games.
Part of this can be attributed to COVID that saw gaming as a form of social connection, but there are also more forms of participation allowed in gaming.
For example, web3 games like Gods Unchained allow a consumer to own and trade the digital assets (eg. skins, swords) and VR/AR offers the opportunity for group gaming.
These changes in viewing behavior are having significant repercussions, both directly by industry consolidation by the likes of Microsoft’s $69Bn acquisition of Activision Blizzard and indirectly with the underlying industry challenges that has now resulted in 100+ days of the writers and actors strike.
