Hype Cycle

“Hype Cycle” – a cartoon that illustrates the new exuberance for generative AI.

Amid the growing hype surrounding the launch of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Google search interest in the word “AI” has overtaken “Bitcoin” and continues to climb.

An example of the halo effect of this hype is Microsoft‘s stock price that rose 6% (or $120Bn) on the back of the launch of GPT4 last week. Microsoft is an investor in OpenAI, the company who has created ChatGPT.

However, one of the creeping concerns with the usage of generative AI is the cost of storing all the data generated as output.

This problem is only going to get worse, with Gartner estimating that while generative AI presently accounts for only 1% of all data produced, by 2025 it will account for 10% of all data produced.

Perhaps for generative AI, the collapse in the hype will be from humans getting fed up with the sheer volume and cost of sub-par content produced by bots.

“This dynamic is definitely evident in startup batch cohort interview sessions…last year was all things crypto/Web3… this year it’s all ChatGPT, AI, etc…trend, or fad…or is it bling???”

“Whenever using ChatGPT ask for website links to all sources. I have experienced over 50% will be dead links. It also has a “knowledge cutoff date of September 2021″. Important to be aware of the limitations!”

“It’s all about the problem it’s solving and the wide applicability of the technology in the real world.

Crypto was initially a solution for a largely solved problem(currency), and not even a good one at that considering the limited transaction throughput and computational overhead.

The few areas where it really added value over previous solutions, such as smart contracts, NFTs and transaction ledgers, were relatively niche like digital art and supply tracing.

The promise of AI is increased productivity and it can be applied on a massively wide range of applications.

I’ve been using ChatGPT heavily, mostly for software development of an existing non-AI software.

My output per month is 4-5x more than before, and I can’t wait to get access to the new GitHub Copilot.

I’m hearing similar stories from others using it for entirely different things.

I didn’t see much value in crypto for my daily work but the benefits of AI are real and massive for me.”

“I can tell you that inside giant orgs like the one I work at GPT is making huge changes possible. Once you have figured out how to integrate it into workflows and train people on how to write effective prompts. It helps with code, design, workflow creation, IaC, and more. The biggest hurdle is PII with the lawyers but there are so many other uses. And GPT can assist with your legal prep to make sure all your bases are covered.
Big thing as many have discovered is getting it to describe in detail what it’s going to do before doing it.”
