“Not Just for Christmas” – a cartoon that illustrates how many of the brands that surrounded our lives during the pandemic are rapidly falling out of favor.

The pandemic saw explosive growth in the use of online services that enabled us to remain at home and try to live a normal life, including Zoom, Clubhouse, Peloton and Carvana.

However, as we all get back to our normal lives, many of these firms have taken a hit as consumers prefer face-to-face interactions.

For example, Clubhouse, which was attracting 4M subscribers per month at launch and was projected to be larger than TikTok, saw an 80% drop in year-on-year new subscribers in 2022.

More recently, Carvana, which was praised during the pandemic for the no haggle and at-home delivery model for a new car purchases, is close to bankruptcy and saw a 17% drop in website traffic in November.

According to Peter Shier, the president of Naked Creative Consultancy, “we link brands with meaningful periods in our lives.

No matter how useful or convenient these brands are, the connection to COVID can cause resentment.”
