Political Gamble

Political Gamble – A cartoon illustrating that Big Tech’s embrace of Donald Trump could become a liability when the political tide turns.
Under President Joe Biden, crypto faced SEC enforcement threats, including Coinbase’s March 2023 Wells notice, while banks received FDIC instructions to pause crypto activities without clear resolution deadlines. Meanwhile, AI companies faced restrictions on advanced GPU exports. To address this, the tech industry developed electoral influence … crypto’s Fairshake network spent approximately $196M in the 2024 election, backing congressional candidates from both parties, while Musk’s America PAC helped elect Trump.
Trump has reciprocated with faster data-centre permitting and efforts to override conflicting state AI rules. His family’s World Liberty Financial venture creates conflicts between presidential policymaking and private enrichment, exposing the industry to reputational damage by association. Elon perhaps best embodies this overlap among all the tech firms. SpaceX supplies the government’s Starshield system, Elon is helping lead the Pentagon’s Project Meridian study into future warfare and xAI is pursuing a $20BN Mississippi data centre.
In turn, Democrats can use electricity costs and billionaire influence as electoral arguments. New York’s moratorium on large data centres shows that resistance is already becoming policy. As Republicans discovered with opposition to climate measures, genuine concerns can provide fertile ground for opportunistic politics.
If Republicans lose Congress, investigations are likely to follow with the Democrat’s base clamoring for accountability. Today’s access offers the tech industry with little protection against tomorrow’s electorate, particularly when corporate fortunes become identified with one administration.
