Too Hot to Handle

“Too Hot to Handle” – A cartoon that illustrates that while frontier tech is easier to start today, it is much harder to finish.
For most of the 20th century, innovation was blunt and effective. The Apollo program put humans on the moon in under 10 years, at a cost of roughly 4% of America’s GDP. Nuclear power plants were built in under a decade. Once the science worked, the rest was engineering. But that’s changed with today’s frontier technologies, as AI, quantum computing, and nuclear fusion, aren’t stuck on invention … they’re stuck on scale. Training a leading AI model now costs hundreds of millions of dollars, with ongoing compute demands that only a handful of companies can afford.
For example, Anthropic’s latest model, Claude Mythos, isn’t being released publicly. Instead, it’s limited to around 40 enterprise partners. Safety is part of the story, but so is cost. Rrunning high performing models can require tens of thousands of GPUs, turning access into a capital allocation decision. The emerging pattern is that breakthroughs exist, but scaling them safely and economically lags behind. For example, autonomous driving works, but fails in edge cases; similarly carbon capture is viable, but uneconomic at scale.
There are exceptions. Elon Musk, through SpaceX, cut launch costs by ~90% using reusable rockets. Tesla scaled EV production to millions of units annually. His approach, vertical integration and rapid iteration, compresses the path from idea to deployment. But, most frontier tech doesn’t move that way, it sits behind the constraints of compute, capital and coordination.
As Andrew Ng put it, “You can have a Ferrari, but you still need roads to drive it on.”
