“You are Here”– a cartoon that illustrates the challenge quantum technology companies have in hiring talent.

One of the core principles of quantum mechanics suggests that particles can exist in two separate locations at once.

While this is great for enhancing computing power, it does not work for humans trying to understand where they are.

The Quantum industry has raised $3Bn over the last 2 years and has seen a flurry of technology companies raising capital from SPACs. This has resulted in a competitive race for top talent and lots of poaching within the industry.

According to Samantha Edmondson, head of talent at Universal Quantum, “I think the challenge for us is, if we go to hire a classical engineer, they don’t have the physics background; if we hire a physicist, they’re not used to working with classical hardware engineering – analog design is new to them.”

Beyond engineering talent, the next challenge is finding product marketing and sales executives who can both understand the technology and sell to large enterprise and government customers.

Yes to all of this, and what does quantum computing mean for all of the other services that a company may use already? What is it like onboarding and training an internal team to use it, let alone the cost associated with purchase and the price for the guzzling amounts of energy consumed to keep the servers from melting down.”
